Pergolas, Arbors, Pavilions, Gazebos: What's the Difference?
This week on the blog, we’re covering the difference between various outdoor structures that you’d commonly see in both residential and commercial landscapes. We’ll share their unique characteristics and when we’d suggest is best to utilize them. Let’s get started —
pergolas
One of the most identifiable characteristics of these structures are their lattice roofs (a design made up of crossed strips of wood or metal) supported by posts that cover a larger surface area. Pergolas, for reference, would be much larger than something like an Arbor (read more below). Fun fact: because of it’s grid-like roofing, you are able to easily hang decor off of them. The most common would be string lights (as seen in the top left photo and bottom photo) or hanging plants.
Get a Pergola if you’re looking to cover a larger area in your yard that provides ample shade with an eye-catching, accessorizable design.
arbors
The Arbor is the outdoor structure that is less practical than the others due to its smaller frame. Typically supported by two lattice side posts with an arched head, its purposes are mostly for gardening or entryways. They work perfectly for gardening since the lattice pattern allows for greenery to easily climb up.
Get an Arbor if you’re looking to mark an entryway or if you’re wanting a charming structure to add within your garden.
Pavilions
These structures, unlike Pergolas, are made up of solid roofs, but they do have open sides similar to Pergolas. The biggest difference between Pavilions and Gazebos are that Pavilions have no built in floor and are more clean/minimal in design. Pavilions are great for patio areas since they offer full weather coverage from above.
Get a Pavilion if you’re wanting a modern, stable structure that is fully covered.
gazebos
Gazebos are their own breed and can be easily clocked as soon as you see them. They typically have octagonal, solid roofs that are supported by detailed posts and a built in floor that is connected to the overall structure; sometimes, their sides have some kind of screening. Because of its intricate build, Gazebos give off a romantic and charming feel and are well suited for weddings. You’ll often see them in parks with a bench inside to enjoy a peaceful moment.
Get a Gazebo if you want a relaxing space or want a structure that makes a statement for your commercial or residential landscape.
