We compiled a list of plants, trees and shrubs that all require less attention, so you can stick to your routine while still being able to nurture a stunning outdoor living space! Let’s get started —
Peonies
The peony is one of our people-pleasing perennials. Their hearty, lush petals and pretty pink color bring a delicacy and beauty to a landscape. Despite its dainty appearance, the peony is actually extremely tolerant to various climates and also repels deer and rabbit. Once its blooms are gone, its green leaves will continue to give your garden life throughout the season!
Sageleaf Willow
This one is ideal for those who live in colder climates. Not only does it thrive in lower temperatures, it also is resistant to sickness. Aesthetically, the Sageleaf has beautiful icy green foliage and it adds an eye-catching texture and interest into your overall landscape.
Distylium
We adore this bouncy, statement, evergreen shrub. Like the Sageleaf Willow, it is also disease resistant, but also insect, deer, and rabbit resistant! They love warm weather and full sun, but are also able to handle colder climates if needed. They can grow up to 10 feet tall and are shrubs that can be utilized as a privacy hedge. However, it also sits beautifully as a shorter maintained shrub.
Black-Eyed Susan
The Black-Eyed Susan is a flower that is known for being a vibrant, joyful yellow that attracts butterflies into your garden. It is both drought and disease tolerant, but it’s important to note that it does lure in wildlife like rabbits and deer. If these animals tend to be present in your neighborhood and you are still wanting to use this flower, you may want to plant it next to others that act as repellents to these specific animals (such as the Distylium above).
hosta
These versatile plants take on the form of a short, stubby shrub that faithfully return every year. They are great options for a filler plants that enjoy the shade. Fountain Grass is known for its long and slim stems along with its fluffy and golden tips. It’s a classic, timeless ornamental grass that will complement your landscape year round. It even brings freshness in the summer and fall when it blooms colorful flowers. It loves dry soil and is also able to adapt to a plethora of temperatures, making it an independent and low-maintenance plant! Note: Fountain Grass is beautiful planted in bulk, as its feathery, cascading stems bring texture and interest amongst simple shrubs and plants.
Spirea
Spirea is another beautiful shrub that blooms pink flowers in the summer and fall. They prefer full sun to execute the bright colors but are okay with some shade. Spireas are pretty adaptable with differing weather conditions and watering situations, but it’s important to offer it more sun and well drained soil for the first few months. Once it’s established, it can tolerate shade and less water.
Hyrdrangea
This flowering shrub is beloved and truly classic. They come in many colors and are sure to bring life into your space. They do need well-drained soil and need partial sun/shade to remain healthiest. Occasionally water them and ta da! You’ve got yourself yet another beautiful, low maintenance plant in your lineup.
Dusty Miller
The Dusty Miller is commonly used in landscapes as a unique, textured plant filler. It’s bright silver color compliments the often deep-green colors found in most gardens. In addition, this plant thrives in both extreme heat and drought, which truly makes it a simple, low-maintenance choice.
Clematis
The Clematis vine effortlessly brings elegance and whimsy to any living space as it covers surfaces with its deep purple blooms. The best part is that this vine gets more beautiful over time without needing much attention! Sounds like a win-win for us and definitely a plant we’d reccommend in anyone’s landscape!
