How Indoor Houseplants Benefit Your Health

Houseplants are extremely trendy right now. They are beautiful for one, but we wanted to share beyond aesthetics why houseplants are amazing for your wellbeing—especially in 2021. Let’s talk about why houseplants surpass trends because of the phenomenal health benefits they offer us —

01. plants are a form a therapy and can help promote healing

Think we’re fooling you? We promise we’re not! There are studies that prove that houseplants do indeed promote peace and rejuvenation. More importantly, they can even assist in your mental and physical healing.

Horticultural therapy has been around for a while and for good reason. This is why hospitals invest so much resource into ensuring that there are beautifully tranquil outdoor areas for patients to enjoy and rest in. This is also why that same greenery is being brought indoors into hospital rooms. It has been found that patients who were surrounded by natural views and plants recovered more quickly than those without those elements. Not only do plants provide us with beauty, but they can help heal us, too.

02. they teach us to slow down—no, it’s not just a trend

We’re sure you’ve heard those phrases about how plants teach us to “embrace slow growth” or “to keep growing.” Are they corny? Maybe. Is it true? Absolutely!

We live in such a fast-paced society and often forget to slow down and embrace the growth and life that is happening around us. Plants teach us that growth, even if it’s slow, can create a beautiful outcome. In addition, plants can teach us the value of presence and how that alone can foster an abundance of gratitude. Look at us learning from nature!

This is a driving mission for us here at Golden Palm Landscape—to help you slow down and enjoy the beauty of your home and current season of life, whatever that may be.

03. de-stress

This is true, plants make you less stressed! The stress they reduce can help recenter your focus and boost your productivity. Ever take a walk and feel refreshed and ready to work again? Why not bring a little of that into your own work space?

These natural components make houseplants the perfect office companion. If you work from home or in an office, add some plants around your station and see how you feel! And it doesn’t hurt that they also simply add beauty and dimension to any space.

04. natural air purifiers

During the California fires this year, we didn’t have access to clean, purified air outside. We had to filter our own air and make sure it was safe for us to inhale. If you have houseplants, they can be natural air purifiers! How amazing is that? In fact, NASA conducted a study and found that plants can significantly improve the quality of the air in a small spacecraft. If you are trying to utilize plants as air purifiers for a larger space, you will need an abundance of plants for it to be effective. But hey, you can never have too many plants, right? Thanks, NASA.

Here are some plants that are known to assist in cleaning the air:

  • Spider Plant

  • Rubber Tree

  • Ficus Family

  • Bamboo

05. important to to note

  1. Houseplants can cause mild allergies, so if you have allergy sensitivities, houseplants may not be the best addition for your health and wellness

  2. Houseplants can invite pests. If you catch them early on, you’ll be just fine. Keep an eye out and check in on your plants daily to ensure that a couple of potential pests aren’t being given the opportunity to turn into an infestation.

  3. Houseplants can potentially be poisonous! Beware, swallowing houseplants can be harmful to humans and animals. For safety, keep plants away from pets and children if possible.
